Pregnancy Q & A

What is the difference between obstetrics and gynecology?

Obstetrics and gynecology are both centered around reproductive healthcare services for women, but obstetrics has an added focus on pregnancy and childbirth.

To offer such specialized care, doctors receive intensive training focusing on the prenatal health of the baby and mom during pregnancy, at delivery, and in the postpartum period. Doctors in obstetrics also receive advanced training on complicated pregnancies and complexities that might arise during pregnancy, childbirth, or post-delivery.

Doctors that specialize in both obstetrics and gynecology are OB/GYNs. In general terms, gynecology focuses on treating diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system.

Why is prenatal care important?

Prenatal care helps ensure the health of you and your baby. Dr. Jones monitors your health, tracks your baby’s development, and works to prepare you for a safe and healthy delivery.

Dr. Jones also guides you through your prenatal care, working with you to identify vaccinations you may need as well as noting and identifying potential risks, which she can manage appropriately. She even works with you if it turns out that you have a high-risk pregnancy.

As your trusted partner in your pregnancy, Dr. Jones also provides you with the best resources and expertise to help you through the process.

How is my pregnancy monitored?

Your first obstetrics appointment during your pregnancy is often the most extensive.

This appointment includes a complete physical with a pelvic examination, Pap smear, sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing, and blood work. Dr. Jones might also recommend further testing based on your health and family history.

After your first prenatal exam, Dr. Jones schedules regular visits. At first, your exams are every four weeks, gradually occurring more often until your delivery.

At each of your prenatal exams, Dr. Jones evaluates your:

  • Blood pressure and weight
  • Nutritional Status
  • Uterine size to measure your baby’s growth

At your appointments, Dr. Jones also monitors your baby's heart. And, during at least one of your prenatal visits, she’ll conduct an ultrasound to capture a visual image of your baby using soundwaves.

Dr. Jones also takes a “total woman” approach to the prenatal care she provides. To help you feel your best during and after your pregnancy, she provides diet and exercise recommendations to add a new dimension to your life.
