Surgical Gynecology Q & A

What is surgical gynecology?

Surgical gynecology is a way to diagnose, treat, or repair conditions affecting organs in the female reproductive system.

This treatment method might address:

  • Incontinence
  • Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Biopsies or abnormal tissue treatment

Some gynecological surgeries require a hospital stay and sedation. Others are minimally invasive and take place in your doctor’s office.

What are common types of surgical gynecology?

Dr. Jones might recommend a surgical gynecological procedure for several reasons, including:

Cesarean section (C-section)

A surgical method for delivering a baby, this type of delivery might be necessary for high-risk pregnancies or if complications arise during delivery. Some C-sections are planned in advance of delivery.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is done to remove the uterus. Depending on the extent of your procedure, your doctor may also remove your cervix, ovaries, or fallopian tubes.

Endometrial ablation

This surgery destroys the tissues lining the uterus and is often used to treat abnormal uterine bleeding.

Hysteroscopy

During hysteroscopy, a thin telescope is inserted into your uterus through your vagina. Dr. Jones can either diagnose uterine conditions, perform sterilizations, or remove adhesions.

Dilation and curettage (D&C)

D&Cs are performed to remove tissue from your uterus. This is done to remove uterine lining after an abortion or miscarriage. It can also treat and diagnose other uterine conditions.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopic, or laparoscopic surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical technique. During laparoscopy surgical gynecology, Dr. Jones inserts a thin instrument with a camera through a tiny incision to operate.

What can I expect during my appointment?

Dr. Jones is a compassionate physician who understands the stress and fear that can arise when surgery is needed. Before your procedure, she explains your operation, why she recommends it, and what you can expect.
