Our doctor and professional staff target the whole woman and not specific parts of the woman's body.

Our doctor diagnoses and treats varying health issues, such as uterine fibroids, and would like to pass information to her patients and those considering coming to our clinic about this common medical occurrence.

What are Fibroids, and What's the Treatment?

Our doctor at Total Women's Care in Houston, TX, explains that when noncancerous tumors form throughout the uterus, they are known as uterine fibroids. These noncancerous tumors target women in their childbearing years up to the age of 50.

While fibroid tumors are non-life threatening or dangerous, these tumors can create some problems for you and may cause a few harsh symptoms. Some women with fibroid tumors do not know they have them and have no symptoms.

Fibroid tumors tend to keep growing and may cause severe abdominal pain. You may wonder how fibroids can be so painful and yet not dangerous. There are different types of noncancerous fibroid tumors.

  • Intramural Fibroids commonly grow in the muscles of the uterus.
  • Subserosal Fibroids grow outside the uterus.
  • Pedunculated Fibroids take on the shape of a stem with a tumor.
  • Submucosal Fibroids are uncommon and grow in the middle muscle of the uterus.
  • Cervical Fibroids grow on the cervix.

Doctors and researchers don't know what causes fibroids but found that genes/family history for fibroids, hormones, obesity, being of African-American descent, and women who are at least 30 may all play a part.

As explained above, you may or may not experience any symptoms. Our doctor may discover you have fibroids during your routine exam. If you experience symptoms, it depends on the number of tumors, size, and location.

  • Low back/pelvis pain
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Increased urination
  • A feeling of fullness/pressure/swelling in the abdomen
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding/clots/cramping
  • Complications during pregnancy
  • Rare cause infertility

Often, uterine fibroids require no treatment intervention and sometimes go away on their own. If the above symptoms worsen and the tumors are not going away on their own, our doctor may prescribe medication or surgical removal.
