What You Need to Know about PCOS

PCOS causes small cysts to develop around the ovaries. The cysts contain follicles and fluid. Follicles normally release eggs, but when you have PCOS, the eggs don’t release regularly. The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but there are several factors which may contribute to developing PCOS. These include:

  • Insulin resistance, which can cause excess production of androgen
  • Low-grade, chronic inflammation, which can lead to androgen production
  • Heredity and family history of PCOS

There are several signs and symptoms of PCOS including:

  • Irregular or fewer menstrual periods
  • Periods that last for many days
  • Difficulty getting pregnant

You may also notice excess facial and body hair due to excessive amounts of the hormone androgen. You may also experience severe acne.

PCOS can be diagnosed with:

  • A pelvic exam, to check for masses and growths
  • Blood tests, to measure hormone levels
  • Ultrasound, to check the ovaries and uterine thickness

When you have PCOS, your women’s health doctor may recommend:

  • Combination birth control pills to regulate estrogen and progestin and to decrease androgen production
  • Progestin therapy to regulate periods and protect against endometrial cancer
  • Lifestyle modifications including weight loss, and exercise

Your women’s health doctor can also provide treatment for the signs and symptoms of PCOS, including acne and weight gain. If you want to become pregnant, your women’s health doctor may also recommend medications and other treatments to help increase fertility.
