Many different types of contraception are available for preventing unexpected and unplanned pregnancies. Most birth control options can be placed in one of two main categories: hormonal or non-hormonal. Dr. Vonne Jones, the board-certified OBGYN at Total Women's Care in Houston, TX, offers multiple contraception options and can help you select the right one for your needs.

Hormonal Birth Control

One category of contraception offered at our Houston, TX, obstetrics and gynecology office is hormonal birth control. These contraceptives are referred to as hormonal because they contain synthetic forms of the hormones progestin and estrogen. These hormones normally aid in pregnancy. However, hormonal methods of birth control regulate the levels of these hormones so that ovulation is inhibited. Types of hormonal birth control include:

  • Birth control pills
  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
  • Nuvaring® vaginal rings
  • Depo-Provera® injections
  • Nexplanon® implants
  • Skin patches

Hormonal methods of contraception require a prescription and are highly effective at preventing pregnancy since they inhibit ovulation. However, these birth control methods do not protect against the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) so it is important to use additional methods in conjunction with hormonal birth control to protect against STIs.

Non-Hormonal Birth Control

Non-hormonal birth control methods do not contain any hormones and do not usually require a prescription. Many types of non-hormonal contraceptives are sometimes referred to as barrier devices since they create a barrier that prevents sperm from reaching the egg and fertilizing it. Examples of non-hormonal barrier types of contraception include:

  • Male and female condoms
  • Sponges with spermicides
  • Spermicides
  • Diaphragms

Non-hormonal barrier methods of contraception can all prevent pregnancy, but only condoms protect against STIs. An additional non-hormonal option for preventing pregnancy is surgical sterilization, but it is not categorized as a barrier method. The surgical sterilization method is also known as tubal ligation but is often referred to as “getting your tubes tied.” It involves blocking or tying the fallopian tubes so sperm are unable to travel to the ovaries and fertilize an egg.

We know it can be overwhelming trying to decide between hormonal and non-hormonal birth control methods, as well as which specific option within those two categories is right for you. We can assist you with understanding all the different options so you can make the most informed decision.
